Department of Statistics was established in 1974 as a part of Faculty of Pure Sciences and started admitting students in the same year. In 1977, departments of statistics, mathematics, and computer Sciences formed the new Faculty of Mathematical Sciences and Computer.

The main goal of this department is to train experts to get familiar with different aspects of applied and theoretical statistics, including time series, statistical inference, linear and generalized linear models, non-parametric methods, sampling, design, and reliability, and fuzzy modeling for various administrative, academic, and research-conducting positions.
